I had an unexpected break in my Liberia “travels”. Robo and I were sent to SIM’s retirement center in Sebring, FL week before last. We were retiring—sort of.
The middle of May, the Media Team got to meet our summer intern. David came to Charlotte for two weeks of orientation and training. Then we sent him to Sebring. His mission? Interview and capture the stories of those elder missionaries who left their homes and families a half a century ago to spread the light of Christ in other regions of the world. Memorial Day Weekend David left Charlotte to begin his task.
As with any pioneering, there are hiccups. David is the first summer intern we’ve sent to SIM’s retirement center to capture stories. Not too surprising, a few snags came up that were preventing David from completing task well. Claude dispatched Robo and I to Sebring to help smooth things out. We arrived Friday week before last and began the process of listening and equipping.
We got to Sebring Friday afternoon week before last, and stayed until last Friday. We were able to listen, talk and solve the issues behind the snags, and make suggestions. Admittedly, I was a bit nervous. This was my first business trip where I had to go figure out the issues and offer a solution. And thankfully I had my creative husband along (he’s the one who actually came up with the plan). God is good!
At the same time, our trip to Sebring ended up being a bit of a vacation. Staying in one of the guest houses, swimming during the afternoon, sunburning at the beach, and tootling around the retirement village in a borrow golf-cart…sure felt like a vacation to me! Or perhaps it was an early taste of retirement?
